$60,000 in Debt: Month 14

Friday, July 24, 2015

I mentioned in my last monthly update that I was planning on buying a new car.  I made one last big payment on my old car and fully paid it off.  I also went out and put a huge down payment on the car I wanted, however its been over a month now and they are really struggling trying to find me my car.

Now I'm second guessing myself.  My car now runs fine.  It could probably use some tires that handle winter weather better, but other than that it is a perfectly functioning 7 year old car... that I now own outright.

As much as I want a shiny new toy, I know the smart thing to do is to wait until I need something new.  It also doesn't help that in the next few months I may be moving to NH where I wouldn't have to pay sales tax on a new car, and where I'd also have to pay to register it all over again and get new plates, etc.  It just makes sense to wait.

The smart thing would be to take that money I would spend every month on the car and just put it towards my loans.  That would pay them off so much faster... and perhaps when those are finally gone I can reward my self with a new car.

I hate having to make adult decisions.

Belated Christmas and Birthday Celebrations

Friday, July 17, 2015

For Christmas my parents bought Josh and I tickets for a Boston tall ship cruise.  I knew about the whale watches and the harbor cruises, but I didn't even realize we had tall ships that you could actually go out on.

Of course Josh was deployed for Christmas so we had to put it off for a while.

For Josh's birthday I got him Red Sox/Yankees tickets and, since it was a night game, I figured we could make a day of it and go into the city early to do our cruise and get dinner before heading over to the game.

The ship was cool.  It was interesting seeing how they had to pull up the sails to get us moving.  I was a little disappointing in the cruise itself though.  We basically just bounced back and forth between the port filled with shipping containers and the airport so there weren't any nice sites to look at.  I would have also like to get some history or background on the ship or the area but the crew was quiet during the trip.  All of that aside, it was still a beautiful day to be out on the water in the shade of the sails with the breeze blowing.
Josh had mentioned wanting to check out Boston Kebab House long before he knew about my plan to go into the city and it just so happened to be within a few blocks of the wharf.  I excitedly led us to the restaurant and was so sad to see that it was closed on Saturdays and Sundays.  Who closes on a Saturday in Boston!?

We were both starving at this point and we only had about an hour before the game started so we just headed over to Kenmore and stopped at Qdoba for burritos.  It was delicious however I ate too much too fast and regretted it for most of the rest of the night.

We headed over to Fenway where we had standing room tickets on the Budweiser Roof Deck.  Considering the Red Sox spent most of the first part of the season doing terribly, I figured we'd have no trouble finding seats after a couple of innings.  Of course in the week prior to our game they actually started doing well so between that and it being against the Yankees, we saw no open seats through the entire game.  We won though so it was worth it.

It was a great day, but spending all day in the hot sun was exhausting and I'm not sure I've ever appreciated a shower as much as I did that night.

Fourth Of July Weekend

Wednesday, July 8, 2015

I know I'm a little late with this post, but I had a jam-packed weekend that I'm only just now recovered enough to sit down and write.

I was let out of work early on Thursday and quickly headed home.  Josh and I were making the trek down to New Jersey to meet up with my friends.  After a stop at the liquor store, Walgreen's, and the gas station, we finally hit the road.  It was a beautiful day so as much as driving for 4 hours is not that fun, it could have been worse.  It also helps to have someone you like as a copilot.

When we arrived in NJ, we immediately cracked open a few beers and just sat around the kitchen table chatting and catching up.  An hour or so later the second car load of friends arrived.  There are few feelings as nice as just being surrounded by people you love and talking and laughing until everyone passes out on their respective aerobeds/pull out couches/real beds.

The next morning was pretty relaxed.  We had a delicious breakfast and coffee while we just lounged a bit.  Later we visited the grocery store and then hit the road.  We headed about 45 minutes north to Bear Mountain.  It was a beautiful mountain with trails, fields, a pond, and places to just hang out.  We sat by the pond and made lunches and just continued to relax.  (Looking back at how much sitting around we did makes me wonder why I was so tired after it all, but it was somehow exhausting.)

It was pretty hot out so we didn't stay too long, but we made sure to stop for ice cream on our way back home.

That night we had sushi and pad thai at a place called Tani.  Apparently all of the restaurants down there are BYOB which was really awesome.  We all brought our own drinks and probably saved a few hundred dollars.

After dinner we headed over to the one place that DID sell drinks and we spent the rest of the night laughing harder than I can remember in a long time.

Josh and I had to get up early the next morning to head back home.  Despite having rain in the forecast, we lucked out and had a dry ride home.  His family was having a 4th of July/May/June/July Birthday Party.  I haven't seen most of his family since around October of last year, so it was nice to get to catch up with them.

Sunday morning we went for a little road trip.  There will (hopefully) be more on this later, but I don't want to jinx anything at this point.

After our road trip we took Otto back to my house where him and Mac played for about 6 hours straight.  They are so adorable together.  Otto is finally over his fear of Mac and both of them played until they couldn't lift their head off the floor and just layed across from each other pawing each other's faces.

By the time I laid down in bed Sunday night I was wiped.  I still feel exhausted now two days later.  I'd love to say that I have a nice weekend coming up to catch up on rest, but I don't have one of those for at least the next three weeks.  August will be my rest time...
